Does islam promote violence?

In one sentence

No; the entire Islamic moral code is built to promote peace, truth and justice, and it forbids whatever breeds hatred and harm.

Islam does not promote violence. Its whole code of ethics exists to establish peace, security and wellbeing in society: it commands brotherhood and everything that builds peace, and it forbids every action that stirs up evil or plants hatred in people’s hearts. The qualities it cultivates are the ones admired everywhere: truthfulness, fairness, courage, generosity, patience, kindness and courtesy. Its stated aim is to root out harmful and immoral behaviour, and a Muslim who commits forbidden acts faces consequences in this life or the next. Among the first obligations it lists are truth and justice, which the Quran requires in every situation, toward friend and enemy alike. Violence done in Islam’s name therefore goes against the religion, not with it. The booklet “Islamic Morals that Promote Peace” sets out these obligations one by one with the verses behind them.

Evidence
