In one sentence

The Quran is, for Muslims, the literal word of God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years as His final message to humanity.

The Quran is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe it is the literal word of God, His final revelation, delivered to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, by the angel Gabriel in stages over twenty-three years. It is not a history book, a storybook or a science textbook, though it contains elements of each; its purpose is guidance, and it describes itself as a book in which there is no doubt. Believing in the Quran in its entirety is a condition of being a Muslim. Together with the authentic traditions of the Prophet, which explain and expand on it, it forms the primary source of the religion. The Prophet was commanded to convey it to all of humanity, and in his farewell address he asked those present to bear witness that he had done so. The article “The Story of the Quran” tells how it was revealed and preserved.
