What does Makruh mean?
In one sentence
Makruh means disliked: avoiding it is rewarded but doing it is not a sin.
Makruh means disliked or discouraged. It is the ruling between permitted and forbidden: a Muslim is rewarded for leaving a makruh act but is not sinful for doing it. Examples include wasting water during ablution or eating raw garlic before going to the mosque. Scholars use the category for things the Prophet, peace be upon him, turned away from without explicitly prohibiting. Some schools distinguish a stronger makruh close to haram from a lighter one. Knowing the category helps new Muslims avoid treating every disliked act as a sin. The source glossary gives the full list of the five rulings.
